For international vet students who want to do student placement in Australia, let me show you how!✨ 1️⃣ Visa: Apply for the right one. A tourist visa allows up to 3 months of unpaid study/volunteering. Check processing times (currently 3-6 weeks) and plan ahead. Head to Australian immigration website for more info. 2️⃣ Vet hospital/clinic: Research thoroughly. Explore websites and “About” sections to see if they accept students. If it’s not written, still apply and ask. 3️⃣ Resume : Stick to the Australian format (max 2 pages, no pictures). I used Uni of Melbourne’s template with a few tweaks. 4️⃣ Cover Letter: Keep it brief and clear that it’s for an unpaid placement. Tailor each letter to the clinic, highlighting their values and how they align with your study goals. Put your personality into your cover letter. 5️⃣ Univeristy Support Letter: Attach one from your vet school stating your placement is covered by university’s insurance. I did my placement during the clinical rotation for my course hence, I could get the letter. 6️⃣ Accommodation: Check out GumTree or Facebook for short-term house sharing options. It can be pricey! 7️⃣ Email: Use a clear subject like “Veterinary Student Placement Application.” Keep the email concise: your name, vet school, study year, country, visa status, and placement length. Attach your résumé and cover letter. Be respectful, things like “thank you for your time” can go a long way. 8️⃣ Apply to Several: Don’t rely on one place. Some may take weeks to reply or might not respond at all. I applied to 6, and only 4 got back to me within 2 months. Ask me anything on the comment!
