But the world’s political map tells a much stranger story. Historical empires, overseas territories, disputed regions, and remote islands have created borders in some of the most unexpected places on Earth. France, for example, shares a border with Brazil through French Guiana, an overseas region located on the northern coast of South America. For nearly a century and a half, the Sagrada Família has stood as the world’s most famous unfinished building. ⛪✨ Construction first began in 1882, when Barcelona was a very different city and electricity was still a luxury in many parts of the world. Just one year later, visionary architect Antoni Gaudí took over the project and transformed it into what would become his life’s work. Gaudí dedicated more than 40 years to the basilica, spending the final years of his life almost exclusively focused on its construction. He knew he would never see it finished, famously saying, “My client is not in a hurry,” referring to God. Over the decades, the project survived financial struggles, political turmoil, the Spanish Civil War, and even the destruction of many of Gaudí’s original plans and models. Yet work never truly stopped. Generation after generation of architects, engineers, and craftsmen continued building the masterpiece using both traditional techniques and modern technology. Now, after 144 years, the structure has finally reached its full planned height with the installation of the monumental cross atop the Tower of Jesus Christ. Rising 172.5 metres above Barcelona, it officially becomes the tallest church in the world and completes the iconic skyline Gaudí imagined more than a century ago. However, the story isn’t completely over. While the famous silhouette is now finished, work on interior details, sculptures, stairways, and the monumental Glory Façade is expected to continue into the next decade.
