FINALLY 10 YEARS LATER, 🇮🇩 TAKES HOME THE 🏆! For as long as i can remember, it has been @mikaeljasin @daryantowitarsa and @commongroundsid ‘s dream to bring back the 🏆 for 🇮🇩. We almost did it in 2019 when @mikaeljasin came in 4th in the world. In 2021, Miki sadly didn’t make it to the finals. You would think one would be defeated by this, but heck no. @mikaeljasin took a short break after 2021 from the comps,but he definitely bounced back from the defeat and rose right to the top with his heartfelt and personal performance. Definitely sent some tears to everyone who watched his run. We are all so proud of the @commongroundsid team. Never giving up on their dream and goal. Perservered till the end and finally saw the rainbow at the end of the tunnel. For those who are unaware, the World Barista Championship is the most prestigious and sought after competition in the coffee world. To win this is like winning Miss Universe 😂 Once again congrats @daryantowitarsa , as the head of the 🇮🇩specialty coffee association @aksi_scai , he is not one to share his glories and victories as he is more of the behind-the-scene kind of guy, but i must say i’m so proud of you and all the things you do quietly for 🇮🇩. You put 🇮🇩 on the map ! What an era for Indonesia’s coffee industry, in 2023 we had a Coffee Roaster World Champion @taufanmokoginta, just 2 weeks ago we had @ryanwibawa came in 3rd for World Coffee Brewer Championship, and next year the World of Coffee Event will be held in Jakarta for the first time! 5 world championships, 5 trophies, 14 months… sort of. It actually took years. It’s wild to think about what years of intense focus and dedication can give you. I’ve been lucky to train alongside these incredible coffee professionals these past few years. And while it might look like we won our trophies one after another, I’ve seen first-hand the hard work, sacrifices, and obsession behind each one. One tried for almost 10 years before finally reaching the worlds again — showing relentless tenacity despite setbacks. Another balanced managing a big team while supporting a partner’s world championship campaign, just weeks before competing themselves. A couple of them trained under the weight of their seniors’ legacies and expectations, sleeping on training room floors to squeeze out every extra minute. And still, they exceeded what was expected of them. With the WCC 2025 season wrapping up next month, I’m sharing this not to show off — but to spark a fire. Success may look shiny, but it’s built on unseen struggle: failed run-throughs, tears on the morning of finals, missed flights while sourcing ingredients, the guilt of saying no to family moments, or even going straight from the airport after a win to help a teammate prepare. All done with no guarantee of success — but done anyway. Learn, Unlearn, Relearn. People keep asking me what’s next after winning the WBC. To be honest, I’m not sure yet—but I’m actively searching for that answer. What I do know is that I want to explore aspects of coffee I didn’t get the chance to focus on while chasing WBC gold. One of those is latte art. It’s actually what first got me excited about working in a café (back then, tulips, rosettas, and swans were the standard), but I’ve never really updated my skills in that art and discipline. Fast forward to August this year, when I found myself fanboying over @barista_fan at a show in Beijing. I asked @nicoole_lyn to introduce us, hoping he might have some time to share his craft. This week, that dream became a reality. Liang Fan Laoshi was incredibly generous with his time and knowledge, sharing his skills and wisdom with us. It was an honour to learn both latte art and how to teach from him. It felt refreshing (and also frustrating 😩) to be a beginner again. After three days of diving into latte art, it was my turn to share what I’ve learned about competition preparation, espresso making, and signature beverage design.
